a simple solution for something fun to do.
I loved this play! I must admit that I wasn’t overly enthusiastic when I headed to the Alliance Theatreto see Bring it on: The Musical But let me tell you—they brought it!
The story line was ordinary. A “coming of age” and “fish out of water” combination, the play was about a popular senior-year cheerleader losing her dream opportunity to lead the squad when she was transferred to a new school where she didn’t fit in. She matures as she learns lessons from being an outsider.
The show was outstanding! The music was lively; there was a lot of dancing and a lot of singing. I loved the way they incorporated moving the stage settings into the dance scenes. The lines were so clever that I took note of a few to incorporate into my everyday speech. I’m especially looking for the opportunity to tell someone that it’s time to “put away bitter bitch Barbie!”
The gymnastics and cheerleading experience of some of the cast members was obvious. I gasped a few times when the cheerleaders were thrown so high in the air. Cheerleading has come a long way since I used to practice with my neighbor who was a cheerleader. (I was shy and unpopular--hard to believe, I know--but I learned all her routines wishing I could be so cool.) Now cheerleading is a combination of dance and gymnastics and the performances are exciting. I knew this from having friends whose daughters cheered and competed. The actors did an excellent job. The ending had the audience on its feet and participating. “I say Bring It—you say On!”
“Bring it!”
“On!”
The audience was almost full. Lots of cheerleading groups were mixed in with the regular theatre goers. (Parents, there is some profanity.) Bring It On! Plays through February 20th. Get your tickets now. You’ll be inspired!
