a simple solution for something fun to do.
Twenty-five trees and displays highlight holiday traditions around the world including Christmas, Hanukkah and the Festival of Lights. Trees are decorated, not necessarily as one would decorate a tree in that country or region, but rather to highlight a tradition or culture from the area.
The Consulat
e General of Honduras chose national symbols of Honduras for their tree while Japan’s tree features the deeply rooted tradition of origami and combines this ancient art of paper folding with the crane, a symbol of longevity and auspiciousness. Puerto Rico’s tree highlights the island’s coffee industry. The
tradition of decorating Christmas trees first began in Germany in 1419 and that tree displays the traditional glass ornaments, wooden angels, nutcrackers and tinsel. Each tree is accompanied by a plaque telling of the holiday traditions of the country and an explanation of the tree’s decorations.
Winter Wonderland is a great way to learn about other cultures and enjoy the holiday lights while exploring other exhibits at Fernbank Museum. The trees will be on display through January 8th. Visit the museum’swebsite for information on festive programming and musical performances throughout the holiday season. Admission to the Winter Wonderland exhibition is included with Museum admission.
