Forbidden Broadway April 7 - 24 at Georgia Ensemble Theatre

“It’s just big stupid fun!” Jenny Costantino of KICK Strategy, LLC said with a laugh at the reception after Thursday night’s opening of Forbidden Broadway’s Greatest Hits! at the Georgia Ensemble Theatre in Roswell.

The play, created and written by Gerald Alessandrini and directed by Don Farrell is a musical parody of Broadway’s biggest hits. Jeffery Herndon was marvelous on the piano as he accompanied the strong, rich voices of the ensemble which includes Wendy Melkonian, Marcie Millard, Googie Uterhardt and Don Farrell. The costumes were hilarious. The frequent wardrobe changes and multiple characters portrayed by each cast member kept the audience laughing.

“This is so clever,” said Sally Jamara who attended the play with me and had seen almost all of the shows represented. The humor was smart and contemporary with enough inside jokes to satisfy the most sophisticated Broadway fan while general enough for a theatre novice to enjoy.

It was good to see a near-capacity crowd for opening night of this last play of the Georgia Ensemble Theatre’s eighteenth season. Check their website to see what’s coming up for the new season which starts in September. Georgia Ensemble Theatre
