a simple solution for something fun to do.
Things get crazy when Brady swipes the photo of the college-age homeowner’s daughter as a souvenir from the heist. Swooning over the wealthy, attractive African-American Harvard sociology student, he chances a meeting. She then sets out to help the financially challenged pair. When “Daddy” won’t agree to help her start a fund to assist the local ne'er-do-well’s she and Brady take things into their own hands. This is complicated by the fact that Denis is dating the town sheriff. (Well, ‘dating’ isn’t exactly the right word if you know what I mean!)
Entangled in the botched thievery complicated by Brady’s attempt to unearth his own plan to avoid jail they accidently get some information that could change everything.
This play by Josh Tobiessen challenges some old sterotypes with humor. The set, designed by Marion Williams depicts a run-down shack inhibited by a couple slackers amazing well; right down to the crumpled beer cans, used fast food wrappers, lint and Raid ant traps. Luke Robertson plays the gruff ‘Denis’ whose hard exterior protects a private pride and love of family. Lakisha Michelle May is the right mix of high-brow beauty and genuine compassion to play ‘Caitlin’ so that this girl of privilege winces just the right amount in the presence of sewer problems, nasty surroundings and a total lack of sanitation. Veronika Duerr is a hoot as the loud-mouthed, domineering female sheriff. Jimi Kocina , as Brady is appropriately annoying as the ignorant, white-rapper-wannabe brother.
Spoon Lake Blues plays at the Alliance Hertz Stage through April 24th.
Parental advisory: contains moderate profanity, drug use, sexual situations, and moderate thematic elements.
